Comedy in a care home &#8211; Care Home Tour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDementia doesn\u2019t smother their capacity to feel joy\u201d says Liam \u2018Pope\u2019 Lonergan, a part-time standup comic and full-time carer. He co-organised a troupe to perform The Care Home Tour, a comedy gig for residents with and without dementia at the Madelayne Court Care Home in Chelmsford, Essex, in October. It combined physical comedy, clowning, stand-up and interactive games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople treat their elderly residents like potted plants: make sure they\u2019re watered and keep them out of direct sunlight,\u201d says Lonergan. \u201cHaving worked as a care assistant for nearly five years \u2013 interacting with them, consoling them, being shown around the neighbourhood of their memories, I can assure you that their twilight years aren\u2019t just a protracted terminus. Dementia is about living in, and so for, the moment. Theatre about mental health &#8211; Acting Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cambridge-based theatre company Acting Now unites adults with and without mental health challenges to explore the subject and its enduring taboos. Singing for wellbeing &#8211; Harmony Choir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established in 2016 to inform University of Edinburgh research into how singing together improves mental health, Harmony Choir is still going strong. Some choir members have experience with mental illness and the group aims to reduce the stigma associated with such conditions. Reading as therapy &#8211; The Reader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Reader charity pioneers\u00a0Shared Reading\u00a0\u2013 \u201ca simple idea that changes lives\u201d.\u00a0They bring people together to read literature \u2013 from novels to poetry \u2013 to help improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation. \u201cBooks taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who had ever been alive,\u201d said US author James Baldwin.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31674\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31674\" class=\"wp-image-31674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.positive.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/reader-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image: The Reader<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>5. Moving for the mind &#8211; Company Chameleon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kevin Turner co-founded Manchester-based dance company Company Chameleon.
